From the Editor: The Research Paper that can Change Machine Learning
We are living in the golden age of artificial intelligence(AI) research. Every week there are dozens, if not hundreds, of new AI research papers published by academic institutions and technology companies. Most of those papers focused on highly theoretical scenarios but, from time to time, some research comes along that you feel has the opportunity of changing the entire AI space. This is the case of the recent Lottery Hypothesis paper published by researchers of the MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab (CSAIL).
The Lottery Hypothesis, basically states that most neural networkshave shown that neural networks contain subnetworks that are up to one-tenth the size yet capable of being trained to make equally accurate predictions — and sometimes can learn to do so even faster than the originals. That essentially means that neural networks can be trained using a fraction of the computational resources we have today. Shortly after its publications, companies like Google and Uber are already adopting the Lottery Hypothesis in their technology stacks. Certainly impressive for a new AI research paper.
